Description

Salvia-Hummingbird Sage, Salvia spathacea

A California Native, Hummingbird Sage is adored by pollinators, especially hummingbirds, but also bees and butterflies. Distributed from Sacramento south to southern California, it can be found growing wild in various habitats, including oak woodlands, chaparral, and coastal sage scrub. This large, attractive sage is notable for its bold pink and red flowering spikes and pleasant fragrance. It blooms in spring and summer, with sometimes a second flush of flowers in the fall. It spreads by rhizomes and over time can cover a large area, making it a popular hedgerow plant. Grows to 4 ft wide and tall and is well-suited to shade and part-shade. It will do OK in full sun if it has some afternoon shade. In its native locations, it is frequently found under trees and large shrubs. It is drought tolerant and can survive without summer irrigation once established. Some supplemental water will keep the foliage green.
