Monkeyflower-Red Bush, Diplacus puniceus
Also known as bush monkeyflower, this perennial has an abundance of glowing red flowers. To 2′ tall. Takes sun or part-shade. Drought-tolerant. Found throughout the coast ranges of California. Native to California. Grows on rocky hillsides, canyon slopes, disturbed areas, chaparral margins, and open woodlands. Does best with some afternoon shade. Once established, they do well without summer water. The monkeyflower plant is an important larval host for Baltimore and Common Buckeye butterflies. These lovely butterflies lay their eggs on the foliage, which provides an immediate food source once the caterpillars hatch.
