Salvia-Mesa Azure, Salvia microphylla
Perennial shrub with long blooming flowers on compact plants. Growing 18″ – 24″ tall and up to 5’ wide. Salvia ‘Mesa Azure’ is a hybrid between Salvia greggii, Salvia microphylla, and probably Salvia lycioides. Starting in mid-April, the woody-stemmed clump of Salvia ‘Mesa Azure’ is smothered in a mass of thousands of purple flowers. The dense habit and extraordinary flower cover raises the bar to an entirely new level. Although flowering slows in the heat of summer, it returns with vengeance in fall. Good drainage and bright sun are the keys to success. Moderate to occasional summer water helps keep the bloom going. Loved by bees and hummingbirds. Deer resistant. Does OK in clay, but be sure it drains well in winter.
