Cup and Saucer Vine-Violet, Cobaea scandens
This robust climbing vine will add style to your garden. Blooming in late summer and into fall, the bell-shaped rich purple flowers resemble a teacup on a saucer. With their late bloom, they provide forage for bees and hummingbirds when it is typically scarce. Growing up to 20 ft in a season, support them with a trellis to give them climbing room. Transplant carefully–roots don’t like too much disturbance. Tender perennial in zone 9. Protect from frost. Good for cut flowers. Pick flowers right before they open and sear the stem ends in boiling water for 7-10 seconds. Typically a 5-day vase life.
