Blazing Star-Liatris, Liatris spicata
Also called “gayfeather”, this wildflower has become a florist’s favorite in recent years. The tall purple or white spikes are striking in arrangements—and in meadows. Liatris plants typically grow from corms that sprout in spring, and plants bloom in late summer. Planting to bloom time of laitris flowers is about 70 to 90 days. Once established they require little water, so allow the soil to dry between waterings. Division may be needed every few years and is usually done in the fall after they die back, but spring division can be done as well if necessary. To ensure good bloom in subsequent years in our planting zone, lift the corms from the soil in fall, divide them, and store them in slightly moist sphagnum peat moss over winter for about 10 weeks before replanting in spring.
