Farm Tips: Starting Perennial Flower Seeds

The latest Farm Tips video is now out! This is the time of year when we start our perennial flower seeds, like native milkweeds, Black-eyed Susans (Rudbeckia), Purple Coneflower (Echinacea), and many more. There are some special techniques to ensure success, and the one we’re discussing this week is cold stratification, which provides an artificial winter for seeds. Check out the video to learn more.

If you want to learn more about seed starting and get your seeds going for this season, sign up through our Online Store for our February 11 Seed Starting Workshop, 10 AM to noon. This session will focus on the techniques and equipment needed for indoor seed starting, conditions needed for optimum germination, and timing of planting. We’ll do some hands-on seed starting, so come prepared to get a little dirty. Bring your own seeds or help us sow some of ours. We provide a tray with a selection of cell sizes and seed starter mix for planting.
