Salvia-Russian Sage, Salvia yangii (used to be Perovskia atriplicifolia)
Russian Sage sports fuzzy spires of long-blooming lavender-blue flowers on silver-green foliage. Russian Sage is easy to grow, tolerating poor soil and doing well in hot, dry climates. It is drought tolerant once established, but will need regular water to get established. Very attractive to pollinators. Makes a great backdrop for coneflowers, rudbeckia and gaillardia. Fowers form on new wood — branches that grew during the current season. Prune Russian sage plants back to about 6-8 inches in the spring. Do this just as the lower leaf buds are beginning to open, but before new growth fully starts. Russian sage is reliably hardy in USDA Hardiness Zones 4-9.
