Lupine-Silver Bush, Lupinus albifrons
The silver bush lupine (Lupinus albifrons), a perennial herb that grows 3 to 5 feet tall, bears spikes of violet, pea-like flowers and pale, feathery foliage. Silver bush lupine grows naturally in the mountains and along the coasts of California and Oregon. The heat-loving lupine thrives in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 9 and 10. It prefers full sun with good drainage and likes sandy or rocky soils that are dry, but will tolerate some moisture. The silver bush lupine thrives when grown in full sun, but it tolerates some shade. Plant it in the sunniest spot of your garden for robust growth. It also does well when planted beneath trees where it receives dappled sun for part of the day. Host plant for native butterflies.
