Crocosmia-Orange Lucifer, Crocosmia lucifer
A bold, summer-blooming perennial known for its arching stems of vivid, flame-red tubular flowers that light up the garden from mid- to late summer. This dramatic plant grows 3–4 feet tall and spreads about 18–24 inches, forming clumps of upright, sword-like foliage that adds vertical interest even before bloom. It performs best in full sun (tolerates light afternoon shade) and prefers well-drained soil enriched with compost. Provide moderate water during active growth; once established it tolerates short dry periods but blooms best with consistent moisture. In Zone 9, Crocosmia is typically winter dormant, dying back after frost and re-emerging in spring. It is frost hardy and reliably perennial in Mediterranean climates. Highly attractive to hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies, yet generally deer resistant and moderately resistant to rabbits. Gopher resistance is moderate. Over time, clumps will slowly expand and can be divided every few years for vigor. Excellent for cut flowers, pollinator gardens, cottage borders, and bold color accents. Can be grown in large containers with good drainage. Each 3-gallon pot has 5 bulbs and makes a great deck plant!
