Red Flowering Gum Tree, Corymbia ficifolia
The Red Flowering Gum tree (native to Australia), does best in full sun. It has evergreen, broad leaves that range from three to seven inches long. Blooms in late summer with red/orange clusters of flowers that are rich with nectar. Bees absolutely LOVE them! Red Flowering Gum grows fast and is extremely showy when in bloom. San Francisco uses them as street trees. An established tree is drought tolerant, but still appreciates regular deep watering. New leaves may be damaged by frost, but the tree will survive and put out new growth once it warms up. Not suitable for colder microclimates than Zone 9a. Pruning back the seed pods is recommended to reduce weight on the branches. These trees grow to be 20-25 feet tall, providing food for pollinators, homes for birds and shade and beauty for humans.
