Balloon Flower, Platycodon grandiflorus
A long-lived herbaceous perennial known for its whimsical balloon-shaped buds that open into starry blooms in summer. In Zone 9, it is winter dormant but reliably re-emerges in spring. Grows 12–24 inches tall and 12–18 inches wide, spaced about 12–15 inches apart. Prefers full sun to light shade and well-drained soil. Provide moderate water, especially during bloom. Attracts bees and butterflies. Generally deer resistant and not favored by rabbits; moderate gopher resistance. Fully frost tolerant and hardy in freezing conditions. Best left undisturbed due to its deep taproot. Suitable for containers with excellent drainage.
